Blown turbo does not prevent the engine from starting. Clouds of smoke, loud whine, loss of oil - these are possible, but not what you described.

Take the car to a different garage!

Ok ,i got a call from the garage telling me turbo as failed ,oil coming from pipes and possibly blocked ,now i trust this garage and they have told me that the failed turbo is causing the car not to start ,i have sourced a new turbo and taken it to the garage, while i was their they had the bumper of the car and were in the process of taking the turbo off, I have seen the turbo and he shown me the bent shaft ,i cant move the car to another garage while work is being done, why would he have me spend over £500 on just a whim that the problem could lay elsewhere, all i can do is ask whether my blown turbo as caused the engine not to start and they are convinced that the turbo going is the failed engine starting...its not easy to just move the car to another garage when it doesn't start

I am sat here worrying that the money I have just spent and do not really have is not going to be the solution to my engine not starting, I took the car to the garage ,explained my problem, he looked and told me after taking( inspecting turbo) a pipe off it was full of oil and I have a turbo failure,i was lead to believe that oil in intercooler and pipes could be blocked causing engine not to start , I have just paid for a turbo and I have yet to pay for fitting, its not going to be nice to hear by the way its not the turbo the stopped the engine firing its something else ,all I know is I was driving the car loud pop then engine died ,tried restarting and it wouldn't ,is it just a coincidence that this coincided with the turbo going, very confused .

to block those pipes you would need a really big quantity of derbies and oil, despite the fact that everything couldnt just pass through to block the pipes..its not easy to block the air. i would not be convinced without seeing with my own eys, and it would be the first wrecked turbo that i see that doesnt let the car start, rough, but it would start.

i hope this year is better for you...and you car..

happy 2014 any way

All I can now add is ,the turbo was working fine prior to me hearing the popping sound then not being able to restart the car....I have the old turbo at home and there is a lot of play in the rod and it is slightly bent and not central, nothing is broken on the turbo , it went in to the garage with a starting problem, they looked and said turbo no good etc that's your problem, nothing much I can do but believe them.

Not sure what you mean by Not true with the options I had , my car breaks down Christmas day , I eventually get it taken to the garage 7 miles away ,I explained my problem and left it with them, next was a call telling me turbo had gone ,now it didn't go in with a turbo issue it was a non starting issue ,they new that from the start so I presume some basic checks were made before I had to fork out over £500 for a new turbo fitted...so basically today when the car should have had the turbo fitted they are going to tell me that I am back to square one your car is not starting, this is a large garage that is pretty well known and were I have taken my car for years I really have no reason to believe they don't not what they are doing as I said the car went in with a non starting issue not the turbo it was the garage that told me the problem.

I'm no expert but I've not heard of a turbo just going pop! It sounds to me more likely to be something electrical blowing.

See my reply to another post today regarding turbo replacements - recons don't have the best reputation so a new one may be a better bet.

Just received the car back, turbo fitted and now running fine,i did ask if the turbo could stop the car from starting ,his reply was if the exhaust was blocked enough it would .

Did they do anything else apart from change the turbo? I assume they changed the turbo feed and return pipes, cleaned out the CAT and exhaust, EGR valve etc?
