Went to see car, everything ran smoothly, as so when I went back to buy it. Cold engine the lot I checked. The car is a 2006 Megane 1.4 Extreme with 44k on the clock
Couple of days of owning the car I went to start the car by pressing the Brake and Start and it stalled 5 times. The revs just plummited and the engine stayed alive for 3/4 seconds. I eventually got it started after putting some revs on the accelerator but surely it should be like that? I've never had to do that before. All your help would be appreciated! I'm not very knowledgable about cars and would like to know where to start.. Its hard to hear with the car being so quiet aswell! Thanks!

Re: Problems with car I have just bought..
get it on a reader and see what error codes come up. sounds like an electrical / sensor problem . £40 - £50 for a ecu check or get one from ebay and save yourself a penny or 2.
you say it starts eventually when u rev it.. have u checked the service manual to see what grade of oil has been used.. i THINK this can cause start up problems but not to sure.. but knowing renaults it could be anything..

Yeah it starts when I rev it, well this time it did. It has recently been MOT'd and Serviced before I bought it. I've heard it could be something to do with faulty ignition coils..

hmm i very much Doubt it as youd have the same problem if the car was started from warm + other problems like poor mpg, lack of power , hesitation on acceleration, slow build up of power or sometimes missfiring..
have u tried starting it after a run to work or something and then see if it starts ok ?
Re: Problems with car I have just bought..
Well the car runs very smoothly. MPG hasn't been a problem. Power is as I expect for a 1.4. Well this was the first major one, I had had the car parked up and turned off for around half an hour. I'm just a bit clueless as its not the same as a normal ignition. The fact it starts, but then looses all revs baffles me..?!

Clean the throttle body and check the coils. These are very popular faults.
The next will be the fuel supply and sensor readings to check. TDC and camshaft sensors usually prevent the engine from starting all together, but they may fail partially, which is less obvious.

If no faults are showing on the reader, then If you can clean the sensors yourself making sure they are free from crap and dirt.
My mate not long changed a throttle body same model as youres problem was still there..
Its a very commong problem apperantly

Re: Megane 2006 Fails to Start - Constant restarting ignitio
Well today it only seemed to stay on once the engine was past one notch on the temperature gauge. I went renault and they said they would have to clean/change the throttle body. I am visiting a friend tomorrow with one of those Snap On reading kits which will hopefully give me a better indication.
Re: Megane 2006 Fails to Start - Constant restarting ignitio
Well I did that and resetted the throttle body. The car has started everytime since. However a minute into my drive, when i down shift, my car just stalls. So i start it back up and then it drives like normal again... Confusing! Any help? Thanks
