MEGANE GOING UP IN SMOKE

Postby dazbex » Mon Jan 14, 2013 1:08 pm

Hi all ive had just about enough of my car!!! 1.5 cdi maxim hatch back 2006

please take the time to read this and if poss give me some much needed advice!!!

i bought this car 3 weeks ago for my mrs to carry our two children about,

he goes-.... car got stuck in 5th gear, pulled over couldnt get any gears at all, but after turning engine off i could get all gears, managed to get the car home clutch felt funny and was grinding into each gear, took it to garage the clutch master cylinder had gone plus a clutch pipe, (best way i can describe it) sorry,
garage had car for a full week, :cry £200 bill!
picked the car up all seemed fine but few miles later, especially in the morning when pulling off it judders quite bad aslo in second gear, forgot to mention before the m/cylinder broke the clutch used to bite straight from the bottom of the clutch travel, and now it bites right at the top at the last minute, also forgot to mention (sorry) that in between gear changes it sometimes over revs slightly, does not do it all the time though,

please please i need advice, i told the garage who fixed the m/cylinder about it, his reply was at least you can get the gears now though, oh and he also said hes to busy and cant look at the car for 2weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :mad

i really dont know what to do now, i payed £3500 for the car, £200 to fix it, £400 on 4 new tyres its cost me a small fortune, and i have got very little money left to spend on this car, all i want is it to run properly and be reliable for my family!! going crazy here, i can see me loosing my rag and putting a match to it!! :banghead

please help

i had a simular problem in relation to the juddering and slipping clutch but not the same thing led to it. what i did is poured some liquid brake cleaner over the clutch with the engine running with someone pressing and depressing the clutch pedal. theres like an inspection hole in the top of the gear box, which in my case some oil got in to, and stayed on the clutch plate. worth a try perhaps?

dazbex,

Diesel Renaults generally have a grubby high biting point. It may cause revving when changing gears until one gets accustomed to it. It is also possible that the garage used a wrong part (for a more powerful engine), as they are at least two types. Please check the part number. The clutch is self-adjusting, so it is important to press it fully. At the beginning of the travel you will feel nothing first, then a slight vibration of the clutch release bearing, then the applied force will increase as the clutch diafragm springs are compressed. Check if you have the mentioned free travel at the top, about 2cm or so.

The "judder" is probably caused by the top engine mounting.

You've bought a not very old car with the lowest insurance group - who do you think was/were the previous owner(s)? I am not surprised that you have to repair it first.

hi thanks for the info so far nikuk8 and alexb

(nikuk8) i am getting the juddering but no clutch slip, its first thing in the morning, also this seems very strange BUT when the engine is up to temperature the judder STOPS??? and it stops over revving too, *confused***

(alexb) hi alex, thanks for the info, when you mentioned the free play in the clutch pedle 2cm at the top i dont seem to have that, eg: driving along in 5th gear, i press the clutch a tiny bit and it is coasting if you know what i mean, or do you mean get down to the pedle and push/pull the pedle to check for free play? sorry for the dummy terms)

the previous owner was a welsh lady who did a 20 mile trip each day to drop her kids off at nursery(so i got told) i know what you was thinking though cheap insurace = young boy racer thrashing it, i thought same thing, :mad

Dont you guys think this is strange though?? vibration and judder when pulling away in first and second, then over revving between gear shifts, but once engine is HOT it all stops and it behaves itself for the rest of the day even after its been turned off for a few hours!! :conf

And why has the clutch bite changed though? since i had the new clutch m/cylinder?? the bite was at the bottom, now its right at the top?? i know its self adjusting but i cant understand why this has happened ?

i have tried plodding alond in 3rd gear then booting it, foot to the floor, and all seems well, pulls hard for a 1.5dci, does not slip, i would be able to notice wouldnt i ? noise? rev counter? also did this in 5th gear, all good again, took a while to pick up speed from 30mph but didnt slip, tried starting off in 3rd gear with no revs and if i do it right it pulls away eventually, the clutch actually feels nice and strong, i just dont know anymore, DMFW?? but its a really smooth sounding engine when in neutral revving it, can hear the turbo whistling, sounds healthy and strong,

I have actually bought the engine mount front drives side, one next to coolant bottle, i am little nervous about doing it, but seems straight forward enough,

thanks guys for all your info it helps me out alot,....

any more thoughts welcome. cheers daz ;-)

The top engine mount is a very simple job. Two tricky bits are getting under the car to remove the undertray and to manoeuvre the mount in/out in the space filled with pipes. One can drive on two bricks in order to get access to the undertray. I had to remove the mount bracket from the engine in order to replace it.

Regarding the clutch. With the leaking system you had bubbles of air in the clutch pipes. Therefore, it was biting very low, at the end of the pedal travel. It is higher now, which is natural. The questions is whether it is too high or not. When you just start pressing the pedal (the highest point) it should move freely and without any vibration coming from the clutch release bearing. This free travel is just under 1-2cm. After that, if you keep pressing further down, a slight vibration on the pedal appears and you feel the resistance of the spring diagram. Within a couple of cm from this point the clutch disengages. So, the biting point is very high. Is it what you feel?

A high biting point may cause engine revving when changing gears, until one gets used to the feel of the pedal. It is more like a sports clutch. The torque of 1.9dci calls for it!

hi alex you described it well, thats how my clutch is, but you mentioned that it could be too high is that why i am getting the over revving between shifts, what can i do to fix this then? or is it something i have to get used too?

i am starting the engine mount in the next half hour,do i need to support the engine with a trolly jack under the sump? says so in the haynes manual, i am hoping that this engine mount will fix the shuddering when the engine is cold in 1st and 2nd gear....

one more thing alex, the big plastic cover that sits ontop of the engine, that says 1.5dci on it, mine vibrates and annoys me, would it be ok if i took if off and left it off or is it there for a reason? since i have had these problems with the car i have been listening out for any little knock or noise, sending me round the twist, ha

The clutch pedal can't be adjusted, just get used to it... I'm assuming the replacement master cylinder is of correct size. There are at least two types for 1.5dci - yours is smaller.

All plastic trim from under the bonnet goes into the shed. You'll need it when selling the car.

Thanks Alex........

sorry to pick your brain AGAIN.....
could you please send me a picture of the engine mount that i need,(or part number) the one that is a common fault on these meganes, or a link of some kind or describe it to me as bennetts who i get my parts from are saying its £80 and i remember reading somewhere it costs around £30-£50, does it look like a thin dog bone or like a spanner shape?? if that makes any sense?? or is it the one thats like a square box with some sort of small metal block in the middle for a thread, like a bolt screws into it?? dummy terms again sorry,

cheers alexb

This one is for my engine. Low quality parts can be bought at half price, but I chose Febi Bilstein.
