There is not much you can do with the engine, so focus on the handling and braking.

It's usual stuff - Conti tyres, not more than 17'' alloys, standard suspension height, GreenStuff pads, Goodrich brake hoses, DOT 5.1 fluid bled annually, tracking, carefully selected tyre pressures, additional support for the engine. What else?.. ester based engine oil and better gearbox oil will give you some improvement as well. You realise, I hope, the scale of the transmission losses in modern cars...
