Electronic steering lock.

Postby 777HAM » Thu Jun 21, 2012 12:09 pm

Hello

Has anyone fitted an electronic steering lock to a Megane 2 and if so does it need to be programmed to the car by Renault?
I believe I have a faulty one and have my car booked into a Renault dealer next week to have one fitted if proved right on the diagnosis by them. I am aware their not cheap so wonder if it can be DIY fitted?

Thankyou.

the locking mechanism it self doesnt need to be coded, the only thing you have to be careful is to take it out with the steering unlocked

good luck

Steering locks are self-coding, 'pairing' themselves to a car the first time they are connected and used. Second hand locks can't be re-used as they willl be 'paired' to the car they came off and as far as I'm aware can't be de-coded. They are a DIY fit, left hand thread and the lock must be disengaged before removing the security bolt.

I have no personal experience of removing these locks, but I have read that one or more of the mounting bolts are left hand threaded and also of a shear headed design.

It would be interesting if you could elaborate.

Cheers.

My steering lock works but does not latch on properly tried adjusting but still won't latch on. I'm guessing the part that goes into the steering rach as worn down is there anyway this can be fixed without buying a whole new unit as they are £300 from renault.

A second-hand lock can be re-used, but you will need to erase the serial EEPROM chip, which sits in the socket on the board, or just replace it. The erased one is filled with 0xff.

Interesting, but not necessarily useful! Hands up who has the kit to remove the chip, put it in a prototyping board and write 256 (decimal) to every address on it.

Is there an easy way of doing this outside of a lab?

There's someone on eBay saying they can decode a steering lock for £50 but I'm not sure if it can be done plus think I would rather buy a new unit and put it on my self, took mine out yesterday only took me a hour max to take out and put bk in.

The chip is 24C04 device, just buy a new one if lazy... They cost about £0.50
All these chips have the same I2C address hardcoded by design. I don't see any problems with replacement.

the 24c04 programmers are really easy to find (and cheap). if you are not comfortable with that work try talking with some mate that have some experience with electronics and programming eproms..

Dave, these locks are held in by a single left-hand thread (sorry) bolt that passes through the steering lock pin. If the lock is engaged, removing the bolt is impossible without damage or it shearing off inside the lock.

the idea is to keep the steering lock in the place in case that the locking mechanism is locked, thats the all point of that device...

its not impossible to remove but you will have a lot of trouble to take it out...

Where can you buy the chip from and do you need any special tooks to fit it?
