Radio stuck on MUTE

Every time I attempt to turn the radio on, the heads up display says MUTE, and wont allow me to do anything else - none of the buttons will un mute it, and strangely enough since this started a couple of weeks ago it fixed itself and worked again as normal for a day or two but has now reverted back to MUTE!!!
Got a feeling there must be a problem with the steering column control. Have already tried disconeecting the power supply and inputing the radio code - which only resulted in going back to MUTE on the display.

Anyone else had similar problem?
