04 1.6 Keycard/Starting Problems?!

Dear oh dear what a finely engineered vehicle this is!!

Now my Mrs has a starting issue which I believe is related to the electronic starting circuit and sensors...

Unlock Car, Jump in car, insert bloody keycard, depress clutch and press the start button....
Dash display is saying 'depress clutch/brake to start', so it is not recognising the clutch or brake has been depressed. BUT does seem to be recognising the card.

It will on occasions start normally (beautifully thanks to the new dephaser I put in!) but as these starting problems creep in she does not want to drive it for fear of getting stuck.

I am looking for a few pointers before I get stuck in tomorrow, is there any probing I can do?
Or is it diagnostic time?

Make sure its in neutral and press the brake pedal
If it starts as it should the wire for clutch start is either snapped or pulled off switch (common problem).
