225 Power Upgrades. How much for how much?

Postby Warrender » Wed Sep 03, 2008 10:22 am

Hi im looking for some tuning advice and wondering what mods people are doing to 225s for increased power. Having a look around there doesn't seem to be many highly tuned meganes about. Obviously lots of horsies and front wheel drive arent ideal but thats never stoped anyone :rock . haha

Im hoping for 285BHP out of my Trophy with a bit of tinkering. I realise this isnt anywhere near big power but should be a nice low-lag compromise (plus-much above that and the worlds smallest turbo and narrowest throttle body/inlet plenum that renault kindly provide :banghead would have to go the journey). My thoughts being re-map, exhaust, de-cat, filter, larger intercooler (in the post as i write) and hard pipe kit (renault should be shot for the standard boost hoses on the megane).

Has anyone tried this combo or any parts there of?

Can anyone recommend a re-map?

Any idea of what power the engine will take without notable strengthening or machining? (just incase ;) )

Is the 225 turbo lump the same as that used in the later 172s (cup etc) - same engine code (except for the T ). Does it have low comp internals or have they kept NA pistons and run low boost (as rover did with the 220 Turbos etc)?

Is anyone running the larger inlet manifold from the NA version of this engine, on a 225?

Anyone know of any other strengthening or uprating between the NA and Turbo versions of the engine?

Also does anyone know of any problems arising if the CAT is taken out of a 225 (service lights, misfire, over/underfueling etc)

Any and all help very greatly recieved.

hi mate

i have a 225, as far as power upgrade the best value for money was the re map. i had mine done at red dot racing in watford. had a rolling road before which showed 223 bhp then after the re map the rolling road showed 257.6. also torque went to 235 pounds. i also had a itg pannel filter from k tec.

since the re map i had a forge dump valve and changed all pipes to samco. also i just got the car serviced last week and put denton iridium spark plugs and it runs like a dream.

the next step is a full miltex system and forge intercooler and i think it should run about 275-280.

only problem i had was holding traction because the turbo came on a bit earlier with the re map. 3 days after the re map i had a run in with a e36 m3 evo. off the lights till the end of 3rd gear he was left in my dust, then towards the end of 3rd he started to gain but it was too late.

hope that helps mate

Hi Mate the last guy seemed to have some decent figures for you to try, i'm situated in South Africa and have a F1 megane not to many places offering mods over here, however re-mapping is beeing quoted at around a 33 kw hike, from 165 to 198, sorry not to sure on BHP, in addition I believe one of the biggest gainst can be seen by uprating the intercooler also, if I'm not mistaken you get about an extra 15 kw from the intercooler, matched up with ram mapping your looking at 213kw, good enough to drop most cars, not so sure about Evo's or Scubbie's, 4 wheel drive helps... I would imagine changing to a K/N filter or similar will give you around 1 kw and a full de-kat with worked pipes would probably free up around 4 kw's, not worth doing realy for the price, however it will sound better and look better and every bit helps, it depends on your budget...
Hope that helps...

Excellent. Thanks for the advice guys.

My intercooler arrived the other day. Slightly larger than i had imagined which im quite happy about. :grin And im hoping to make the hard pipe kit at the weekend all being well.

Im thinking of ordering a Mongoose stainless system - can get one off the net for £320 i think. Had one on my rover 220 turbo coupe (tomcat) years ago and it sounded sweet plus helped with the bhp. Tempted with a Milltek but not sure the extra £80 is justified.

Once again thanks

I'll keep you posted as the modding progresses.

Hi, we can remap the 225 to 260bhp torque an extra 55nm.. all with a lifetime remap warranty and all are custom maps to suit with any any mods.. :)

Hi mate you can use RS Tuning in leeds or Ktec Racing or Red Dot

I have a stage 1 remap on mine, by RS Tuning with 260bhp ish. It definately feels quicker but i have left the rest of my engine standard, it picks up extremely quickly :grin

Fitting a dump valve if not fitted correctly will slow your Megane down, make just theres no air leaks...

Stage 2's can make upto 280 bhp i think but the torque can be had upto 320 lb/ft! This is what will pull you like a jet lol

I have a cat back exhaust on mine, it does help but i will say, a decat is good however on the Meganes there is already quite a good flowing big cat on it and when you decat them i dont think they make much extra just a few bhp i believe... Also it takes about 4 hours to fit apparently as its right up near the turbo.

Decatting will help the turbo spool up quicker so it will make less lag at low rpm...

Anyone wanting advice on a remap give us a shout or check website... :)

I'm not a meganne owner but been looking at buying. Currently have a 1.3 Toyota turbo running 270bhp which is v light and v fast as u can imagine. It started out as a 130bhp hot hatch now it takes evos etc with ease...

What's the different stages of mods for the 225 and what power can be seen? How much does each stage cost? Thanks!
