Useless headlights - help.

Postby Orange225 » Fri Dec 09, 2016 8:05 pm

I fitted Osram Nightbreakers.
To say that the difference was awesome would be an understatement.
They were fantastic . . . . . . BUT ONLY ON MAIN BEAM, WHICH ABSOLUTELY LIGHT UP THE COUNTRYSIDE..
However, the normal headlights were completely and utterly useless, and that's with upgraded bulbs!!!
Mind you, they were completely useless beforehand, so no difference there.

So, has anyone found a dynamic solution that actually allows them to see what's happening in front of them at night time.
My lights are so useless, I daren't go out at night - - they are that bad
Somebody said to me that it was the lenses fitted to the vehicle, so try HIDS.
Big expensive mistake if they don't work!!!

Surely all meganes are the same - useless headlights.

So, any ideas anyone???

I have exactly the same problem, and exactly the same bulbs.

It has been suggested that the projector lense has collected a lot of dust and residue over the years, and might be worth cleaning those first.
My plan is tommorow to take the bumper off, remove the lighting units and try cleaning the lenses. Always try the cheapest options first!

There is a video on youtube if you want to have a go yourself.

Otherwise it'll be an upgrade to HID for me too.

although I haven't put them into my megane as yet, i always used to run my cars with 100w rally bulbs, illegal but at least they lit the road ahead and I never got stopped ones in over 20 yrs of having them fitted to various cars and they are cheap to.
Hope you get your problem resolved mate.

Do you have any problems with MOT? Where can I buy these bulbs?

Halogen H7 give about 700 lm standard and 1500 lm Osram night breakers at about 3500K colour temperature. HIDs (not H7) give 2300-2500 lm at 4300K. The new LEDs can fit H7, brightness upto 2500 lm, colour temperature 3500-8000K to choose from. I haven't tried them though, but tempted.

Regarding the colour. For human vision 3500 K is the best, 4300 K looks expensive, 6000+ K looks blue and chavish. Blue is not good for eye adaptation - there were some convincing figures about it.

craig,
I bought my rally bulbs from a local spares shop a few years ago, bought 8 of them so I would always have spares but I would think you could get them on ebay or any motor sport specialist such as Demon Tweeks, they are pretty flippin good.

I bought some Osram Nightbreakers.
Took the bumper off the car and took the headlights off the car to see what was going on and to see if I could clean the lense.
The lenses were dirty but I couldn't remove them from the light unit as they didn't fit through the hole :(

What I did find out was when I last swapped the bulbs I hadn't put one in properly, and it wasn't focusing correctly.
Suffice to say Nightbreakers sat in the holder correctly has improved the lighting. :rock

BUT I'm still not happy with the outcome. When the weather improves or the nightbreakers go pop it will either be rally bulb upgrade, or the Halogen upgrade from an ebay seller recommended on this very forum :grin

well at least you've made some sort of progress, I haven't the faintest what bulbs are in my car but the are excellent , no chance of me getting down and dirty to have a good look tho' as I'm disabled. I hate not being able to work on my own cars now but at least I can still drive :D I'll have a look in the garage and see if i've got any of the rally bulbs left over, not promising mind but if I find them I will drop you a line.

Craig, after much searching I found the last pair of 100w bulbs that I have, if you can't sort your lights out let me know by personal message and I will let you have these, if you do sort yours out all well and good.
