Failed Windscreen Wipers 225.....

Postby Warrender » Sat Sep 06, 2008 10:54 am

Hi has anyone had this happen? Any suggestions of a cure?

When i first use the wipers they are slow and stutter noticably as they return to their storage position. Even if you move the wiper lever past the intermittent position the speed barely increases even in heavy rain and on the fastest setting. Regardless of the setting they dont always return to the start position and can get stuck at random positions on the screen and finally they stop working all together! Just what you need in the rain we have at the minute!

Any suggestions? Ive just ordered a haynes manual for the car - be here on tuesday.

The car is an 05 plate 225 Trophy

Cheers

Sure did mate. Turned out my car was a compound problem - Typical!

First check your fuses and relays (engine bay fuse box) as 225s are bad for water ingress. After that i would leave the electrics and go straight for a mechanical check as this is probs the cause exact symptoms as mine. If you pop your wiper arms etc off there are 'c' clips that hold the wiper spindles into the wiper housing. Remove them and take the spindles out. It is very likely that there is no grease inside and they will be sticking-part of the problem with mine. Plenty of grease should sort it, im not a mechanic and took about 15mins from start to being all put back together.

If thats no good check your grounds. On my car the earth point at the rear of the engine bay (passenger side) was badly corroded-another part of the problem on mine, my NS scuttle panel drain hole was blocked and water was runnning down the wires onto the earth point. If your earths are good check your wiper stalk as french electrics arent renowned for their resilience. If you switch it between the modes you should see the corresponding changes to the voltage on the motor +ve. If this checks out then id guess the motor is the fault. They about £160 new from renault (and they will charge you an hours diagnostics to have a look to see what it is-£85 and my local dealer got it wrong anyway!) but you can get them from a scrappy (i did £35 from a 54plate dci - 225 uses same wiper motor as other versions of megane)

As i said mine was a compound problem. I had a duff earth, the linkage had dried up and the motor was weak. Im guessin the bad earth and high friction in the linkage killed the motor as its the smallest wiper motor ive ever seen.

Even if you just bypass some of the above and go straight for a new/2nd hand motor id check your gounds and grease the linkage before you fit it.

Good luck mate!

I just had a similar problem. Thing was that the accumulated dirt in the drain below the windscreens leaded to water retention. That water then reached to wiper motor. I just disassembled motor and cleaned three brushes that make contact on the motor rotor inside with solvent or gasoline and greased whit axle-grease. Now everything works fine. It is up to 25 minutes job. :D
sorry, I forgot to take a picture
