gear stiff left to right

Hi have just brought a 2005 megane 225 cup it has covered 60,000 miles but only covered 2000 in last 2 and half yrs. the gear stick is really stiff moving left to right but selects gears up and down perfectly.

Can some one please help me to what this could be? thanks chris

shortshift possibly, look under your battery tray (ish) see if the shift is a new uprated piece!
