Potential Turbo Issue

Postby Tyronnster » Mon Oct 03, 2011 10:17 pm

My mate has a renault megane 225 (the one with the arse)

Now when he puts the foot down it sounds like the turbo is trying to wind up but then there is a crunching noise, Same sorta noice as a blow off valve but not as there is no boost at all.

When behind an his foot is down it does smoke but not a massive ammount an it is all blackish smoke,

Not sure what it could be,

Help

doesn't sound good at all. The turbo could have damaged fins or could have crap in the system. Only way to find out is having the turbo looked at by a pro. Costs around £250 to recon the turbo if it is that.

i hope its not a major prob. give paul a ring at rs tuning, he is the man when it comes to meg 225's

I'm guessing you got this sorted now mate but if not follow the pipe from the airbox back to the turbo inlet at the rear of the engine bay (when engine cold ;) ). Undo the jubilee clip and pop the pipe off the turbo. You will be able to feel the end of the turbo impellar with your finger tips, get a hold of the shaft and spin it. It should move quite feeely with slight but minimal resistance (just the friction of the bearing). If it doesn't the crunching could be a collapsed turbo bearing - this would explain the crunching noise, the no boost and the black smoke (car overfueling - it should be boosting so it puts the fuel in but there is no boost hence will run very rich).

Also worth noting if it full of oil or anything else that shouldnt be there.

Worth a shot - its a quick easy check.
