Im in two minds about buying an 05 1.4 16v Megane, ive done a little research on the Megane and a lot of re-occurring faults from various owners keep popping up, I:E window problems, gearbox problems, over revving in 1st and 2nd gears, difficulty in selecting reverse, starting problems, stalling problems to name but a few, and after all this i still love the shape of the car. Please can someone offer some practical advice as to whether i should touch this year of Megane or if it was just the early models that had teething problems. The vehicle is an ex motability car with 26k on the clock. Many thanks Mike.

well i have an 05 and i've only had the window regulator problem.
tbh the previous owner should have sorted these out already but you can call the renault dealer in the service details and ask them to do a check on your car (based on VIN/Reg) if there's any recalls due and if they have a history on it.

Thanks for that, seems a sensible idea, is yours a 1.4 & if so are you generally pleased with it, Mike.

actually i have a 1.9dci.

the 1.4 is somewhat underpowered for the weight of the car but if you don't care.. then it's not a bad engine.

Hi Mike

Got a 1.4 petrol and a 1.5 DCi, the 1.4 is always going to be a bit low on the performance scale, they are quite sluggish around town (you kinda get used to it) But on the open road/motorway lets say above 55mph, things improve by quite a bit!

I'm saying - as I have said to other prospective buyers, don't expect a rocket ship, but balance the size of the car to the size of the engine and you will get a good idea on performance, personally I loved my 1.4 and I know other members love theirs - it's a matter of what you need/what you can afford! Hope this helps!!! :D

I don`t think you can ever find a car that's 100% faultless.

The 1.4 may not have much go under 3,500rpm but above that it pulls well. Good motorway overtaking.
You won't have problems with turbo's or dephaser solenoids which you would get with diesels or VVT models.
I now get around 36mpg with an average speed of 23mph when driving in urban areas. The best I've had is 40.5mpg on a long run.
It's a comfortable car to drive and holds the road well. I have the Dynamique which is well equipped and up until now, it has never let me down.
See if you can have a test drive, you might find you like it a lot!

Topic locked. MikeGrant requested his account be cancelled so I assume he no longer wishes to purchase a megane.
