1.4 engine - enough?

Postby gabesz » Sun Feb 24, 2008 5:53 pm

Hi,

I'm about buying a second hand Megane hatchback of 2004 or 2005.
My question is if it would be underpowered with this engine or are 98 HP enogh to move dinamically more than 1100kg (I think the sedan is even heavier, but correct me if I'm wrong)

Please help me by telling your evaluations on the 1.4

Thanks
Gabesz

They are not that quick at getting up to 60mph but once you get the engine revved up to 3,750rpm they have good pulling power for overtaking. The best fuel consumption that I've had is 40.5mpg but I usually get around 33mpg driving around town.

Hi gabesz

I would agree with Jonault, they are not the quickest of machines, but at anything above 50-60 mph they can hold their own with much more powerful cars. Just never expect it to be a rocket and you will not be dissapointed! :D

For most situations, it is plenty. As said above, there is a noticeable surge from just under 4000 rpm, so overtaking is not that dicey if you're sensible. However, I largely drive my car alone but when it is full of people, you certainly are more aware that it is a small-engined car.
