As much as I like my dCi I am concerned about the longer term repair costs of any modern common rail diesel. Mine has so far been 100% reliable but now it's out of warranty any bills are mine

Modern petrol engines are just as expensive to maintain and repair, and as long as you service a Diesel when it needs it you should have no problems. Having driven Diesels for the past 13 years I could not go back to a petrol, I had a Laguna 2.0 as a hire car a few years ago and boy was it thirsty!
If you only do short journeys and a low mileage each year, a Diesel will still make more sense.
Make improvements, not excuses!

Not everywhere. For example in CZ is it approx. (maybe DEEJAY1976 have it similar):
under 1000 ccm - £103,58
1001-1350 ccm - £123,90
1351-1850 ccm - £164,67
1851-2500 ccm - £251,01
over 2500 ccm - £353,93

BTW. This is one of reasons why I have not 2.0l

225s are not that much more expensive to run! Not for what they are anyway. Weve got a 1.6 and a 225 and although the 225 likes petrol a bit more its so worth it!! 8)

Dunno about the 2.0 like but the chances of any of them gettin nicked are just the same

I have a 2.0l vvt and love it, economy is roughly around 30-33 mpg and pulls well through all the gears.
Just had a 54000 service on it, (its on 47k now), and runs like a dream.
Next thing to do on mine is to source a decent set of half (or full leather) seats and some 17" alloys for a reasonable price. :D :D
