Renault Megane Dymanique 1.5 dCI / 1.9 dCI

Postby PhilWainwright » Thu Jun 09, 2016 3:00 pm

I hope I am in the right place (as said in my introduction).

OK, bit of background; I have just written my car off (Merc CLK) and am hoping that in a couple of weeks I will have a cheque burning a hole in my pocket.

I am expecting to have about £3000 to buy a replacement vehicle and I have seen one that really appeals to me. I have seen the Dymanique on a 57/58 plate. The 58 plate is the 1.5 and the 57 is the 1.9. (not sure if this is a II or a III)

The big question is should I go mad and treat myself to this?

I like the listed fuel economy, I love the shape and of course the price is perfect.

I have never had a French car before and I have never owned a diesel before. I would be very grateful for any feedback you may be able to give me...

MkII and if it were me I'd go for the 1.9 unless the 1.5 is the 106bhp version in which case I'd test drive both but probably end up going for the more relaxed and often more economical 1.9.

Well known for electrical issues so check very carefully, also turbo problems are not unknown so unless you're confident I'd advise taking someone with you that knows their stuff. Water ingress is another issue to look out for. Must have is a FSH and, if it has mid interval oil and filter changes that's a big plus especially with the turbo diesels.

Good points are that they are very well specced, great to drive, look good and, provided you get a good 'un cheap to run.

Thank you very much for your help.

I have a neighbour who is an ex-mechanic who will come with me (I have a terrible history of buying cars....).

He has said that he can give it a proper visual going over. Also both he and I have Autocom diagnostics and so he will be bringing his lappie with him. The reason we will use his is because he has Renault specific software for his. (I use WOW to deal with the multiple issues on the ex Mercedes)

Hopefully between his mechanics skills and the use of the Autocom I hope we can spot anything that is hidden. The plan is to use the live data recording during the test drive.

Well, I have been looking at a few of these cars.

Most of my searches have been for local vehicles, within my budget range.... I really do like this car....

But, there is always a BUT in there somewhere..

:hm

Anyhow, my neighbour (who will probably be reading this) has concerns about the reliability of the engine for the 1.9 model.

I am googling some horror stories of blown turbos and am so torn. Could I ask for any guidance at all please, do I follow my heart or my head?
Can I protect myself?

Unfortunately, there are very few cars that fit my specific needs and desires, and I really hoped this could be the one......

Any suggestions would be gratefully received

Introduction

Launched within close proximity to each other, the Renault Megane CC and the Peugeot 307 CC seem natural competitors but drive the two cars back to back and you'll be left in no doubt which is the superior offering. With smarter styling to boot, Renault's Megane CC is the top of the folding tin top crop. There isn't a bad model in the range and used buyers will find a wide choice of cars with something bound to suit.

Models

Models Covered - (2003 - TO DATE) 2DR COUPE CABRIOLET: 1.6VVT, 2.0VVT, 2.0T PETROL, 1.5DCI, 1.9DCI DIESEL [EXTREME, DYNAMIQUE, DYNAMIQUE S, PRIVILEGE]

History

Although its predecessor was undoubtedly a good looking car, Renault's Megane CC moved the game on quite significantly when it was launched at the tail end of 2003. With sharper lines, vastly improved safety features and a trio of punchy engines, the CC also featured the de rigeur retractable hard top roof. Initially there was a 1.6-litre VVT petrol unit acting as the entry-level powerplant with the 2.0-litre petrol engine just above it being the most popular pick. Showing their confidence in diesel engine refinement, Renault also launched an economical and torquey 1.9-litre dCi powerplant that was good for 120bhp. The biggest subsequent change has been the introduction of a punchy 194bhp 2.0-litre turbo engine. A 210bhp version of this unit powers the Laguna. In the Megane CC that would be quite something. The Megane's mid-term facelift showed up in early 2006. More observant members of the public might spot elongated, sleeker headlamps and alterations to the grille which see everything come together in a 'V' shape either side of a more prominent Renault badge at the front. Inside, the instruments got chrome-ringed dials with white background lighting. At the same time an automatic version of the 130bhp dCi engine was introduced and the 105bhp 1.5-litre dCi diesel made it into the CC. The sporty-looking Dynamique S special edition models were launched at the start of 2007 with all the other variants gaining extra standard equipment at the same time.

What You Get

Despite sharing a strong family resemblance with the Megane hatch, in fact only the front headlamps, grille and bumper section and front bonnet are shared with its more practical sibling - though inside, the dashboard and the front seats are identical to those in Megane II. Designed by Renault's Corporate Design Department, the Megane Coupe-Cabriolet is a very sleek car when the roof is down. With the roof up, the silhouette is unconventional, the low dome of the roof and the long rear bootlid taking a little getting used to. The absence of door pillars or side trim strips contribute to the elegant lines and a lot of care has gone into constructing a roof that not only looks good but works well too. Peugeot experienced a lot of teething troubles with the 206CC roof and Renault are looking to avoid similar glitches. The mating surfaces around its opening panels - critical in a cabriolet - have been the object of special care. The stiffness of the body has been designed to keep the cabin space intact in the event of a rollover with the aid of strengthened windscreen pillars, body sides and sills, and by two fixed hoops installed as standard. The third-generation Renault System for Restraint and Protection and the six airbags, including the two anti-submarining airbags beneath the cushions of the front seats, provide occupants with optimum protection. In addition, the Megane Coupe-Cabriolet can be equipped with two automatic safety hoops which deploy whenever an imminent rollover is detected. Luggage space is a class-leading 490 litres with the roof in place, but take this figure with a pinch of salt. Much of this is earmarked for the roof cassette and with the roof folded down, you'll only get a meagre 190 litres to play with. Equipment levels are respectable for a mid-range cabriolet. The electric door mirrors, the four electric windows, with one-touch opening, the anti-draught nets and safety hoops, covered with soft foam, contribute to operating comfort. There are several stowage spaces, including a refrigerated 17-litre glove box which is automatically locked whenever the doors are locked, to protect its contents from theft. Passenger accommodation comes in the shape of four proper seats and interior space which is considerable for a car of this ilk. In the front, the lowered position of the seats ensures comfortable headroom in coupe configuration. The slope of the windscreen has been designed to provide the front seat passengers with maximum space and to reduce what designers dub "cap effect". This is the feeling that the windscreen header rail is intruding on your peripheral vision, masking the view of the road ahead, especially on typically undulating country roads. In the back, the headroom, the knee clearance and the available width are among the best in the class. In addition, access to the back seats is made easier by the position-memory of the front seat slides and seat backs.

What You Pay

What to Look For

Renault have tightened up their quality control to very good effect over the past few years and the Megane now feels as well screwed together as many more expensive German rivals. No major faults have yet to be reported although if you are in the market for a Coupe Cabriolet, do make sure that the folding roof mechanism is in A1 order. Some owners have managed to damage the motors by failing to follow the manufacturer's recommended instructions when lowering the hood.

Replacement Parts

(Based on a 2004 Megane CC 1.6VVT) A new clutch will be about £150 and a full exhaust system, excluding the catalyst, should be around £220. Brake pads are about £40 a set, an alternator is close to £135, and a starter motor should be just under £125. A replacement radiator (with aircon) is about £150.

On the Road

Whichever Megane CC you choose, you'll find a car that's a good deal lighter on its feet than its key rival. If you're at all interesting in driving, however, there's really only one choice to go for and that's the 2.0-litre turbocharged car. Packing 165bhp from the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine lurking beneath its stubby bonnet, the Megane CC 2.0T is usefully quick off the mark. Yes, your acceleration will be blunted by the fact that you're lugging a whole heap of electric motors up the Queen's highway with you but nevertheless a sprint to 60mph in 8.6 seconds is not to be sniffed at for a vehicle of this ilk. Do it with the hood down and you'd swear it was even quicker, the turbocharger whooshing purposefully as it comes on stream. Given its head, this Megane will run on to a top speed of 136mph.Crucially (for Renault) the Megane manages to pip its 180bhp Peugeot 307CC rival in the sprinting stakes and also manages to offer superior fuel consumption and emissions figures to boot. Factor in a price saving of around £1,500 and it looks an open and shut case in favour of the Megane. The 2.0T engine is one that Renault have spread liberally across their range and with good reason. Found in Meganes, Lagunas, Espaces, Scenics and even the Vel Satis executive cruiser, it's a very impressive installation. The Megane features a strut to help reduce vibrations and a revised manifold to give a sporting engine note on the overrun. Fitted to the Megane CC, it emits 189g/km of carbon dioxide and can return combined fuel consumption figure of 35.7mpg. As you might expect from a turbocharged engine, the throttle response is a little elastic but get used to it and it's possible to take advantage of that surge of torque when the turbo comes on stream to effect some devastating overtaking manoeuvres. Although still far from an outright sportster, the Megane Coupe-Cabriolet 2.0T nevertheless proves an entertaining steer, the thicker rear anti roll bar keeping things flat through corners and the firmer springs and dampers providing decent body control and feedback.

Overall

If you need four seats and folding hard top on a reasonable budget, nothing gets close to the Megane CC. Although serious drivers may well give it the cold shoulder, its talents are a good deal broader than you may well expect. We'd choose either the 2.0T petrol car or the 1.9dCi diesel. Whichever model you choose, you're not going to make a bad pick. It's just down to you to make sure the example you choose is up to scratch.

I read this just now..... ahhhh the decision is intolerable

Yes, I went for the 1.9...
I thought it made sense. I have borrowed my mum's car while I have been sorting out my insurance and that is underpowered and drinks like a fish. :banghead:

.
I thought the 1.5 may be same. Also when I saw the 1.5 I really was not impressed. The mileage was supposedly just over 50,000 but the marks on the body and the wear seemed to say 100,000. :hm:
It just didn't give me the 'fizz' I was looking for. It was also very basic as far as the equipment levels were concerned.

So I have gone for the slightly older 1.9 privilege spec which is in far better condition and top equipment level. It also has the 'fizz' and I cannot wait until Friday morning.

Insurance is booked, and I have even gone so far as to order a set of personalised plates..... :D
