PETROL OR DIESEL ?

HI ALL, IM currently looking at buying a cc at around 2005- 2007 my. The 1.6 cars are the cheapest, i dont race about so is this engine up to the the job?
And what is a realistic urban and touring figure.?. I'm not particularly keen on diesels, but 40 mpg + soon adds up. Im planning a camping trip to Scotland ( gear on back seats ), cant think of a better car to do it in!
Years ago i had a 1.9 megane as a company car, around 2000 i think,it went well till the cambelt let go......
I also had a red GTAV6 TURBO, MY FAVOURITE EVER CAR, and a r25 v6 turbo.
