Average mileage after 3 years? (And spare wheel query)

Postby jlscott » Tue Oct 02, 2007 7:20 pm

I've been to see a lovely condition 3 door 1.5dci 100bhp 54 plate Megane, however it has 53k on the clock and is £6750. It drove lovely and I'm still tempted, but it feels a bit expensive.

What's the average sort of mileage for a diesel after 3 years? I'm thinking around the 30-37k mark?

Edit:
Also, the car has no spare wheel. Is it standard for a car with alloys to come with an alloy spare wheel and if the dealer can't provide it, how much could I try to get knocked off the price?

Thanks :)

depends on ts history bro, the normal average is 10-12K however I have a 07 plate DCI GT and its done 10500 since March.

Do you know if its been a hire car (Arnold Clark sell their hire cars on through their forecourts badged as one owner) and most other hire companies sell their stock on as well. Or it may have been a lease car.

If its in good condition and has a full service history im sure it would be ok

Thanks, there is a service history but I've not looked through it. I'll pop back to the dealer and check it over some more :)

with regards to spare wheel,we got a full size spare one but now I have seen they just give you an emergency one.I should think as this is a 54 reg, should have a spare unless they have taken it

If it's a 2005 car then it's not to bad a price you could haggle a bit. If it's a 2004 then it's over priced for that mileage.

Average mileage is about 12K a year for most motorists.

It should have a full size steel spare wheel, Renault did not fit space savers on the standard Megane's

If they won't budge on price get an extended warranty thrown in.
Make improvements, not excuses!

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking about the warranty. They partner with Black Horse on this aspect.

Sounds like a 3 year lease car to me, given back just before the big 54k service is due. The 18k service interval has been changed to 12k on later models mainly because of oil being pushed too far and causing turbo problems, but this car should be ok as it's unlikely to have done loads of short trips. I would recommend an oil change between services from now on though.

Regarding the spare wheel, as has been said they come with a full size steel spare regardless of the alloys on the car - the tyre is the same size though. If you are local to Bristol (or Cheltenham) I could sort you out with a spare for a very reasonable price - I have a steel one and a 16" Nervastella alloy, both with Michelin Energy tyres with about 2mm of tread left (i.e. just legal but fine for if you get a puncture!) Iwas going to put the alloy on ebay next time there is a cheap listing day. I'd hope to get over £30 for the alloy but I'd let the steel one go for a tenner.
At the end of the day... ..it gets dark

Well, I've gone for it - pickup on Tuesday :) The garage will get a spare wheel put in, but thanks for the offer Dave.
