Increasing Performance

Postby Charlsburg » Wed May 07, 2008 2:17 pm

Hey, Ive just purchased a plug and go box. What else can i do to a 1.9dci to increase bhp and top speed such as changing the exaust system or something. Any ideas would be very helpful, thanks.

Hi Charlsburg,

I don't have an answer, but I do have some questions... I'm new to the idea of "Modding" to increase performance.

I've got a 1.9DCi 130 FAP.

Do you know if the box you got works for the slightly different engine?
Was it hard to fit?
Do you have to declare it on the insurance?
Can it be removed when selling the car on?
How much was it?
Is it "legit"?
Does it increase / decrease fuel economy?

Ok well I just ordered mine today from a company called Kingquick, theyre based in the UK and offer 'plug and go' boxes for various disesel engines so you should find one for a 130bhp. If you just google kingquick it will come up with their website and just have a look under renault. I was recomended by another member of this club, if you click the following link it will take you to their ebay shop
http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZkingquick_co_uk

here they only sell the classic which is just the basic for £115, its exactly the same as from their own website just aimed at a different audience. Fitting for the megane is really easy if i remember someone saying, viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6859 here there are pics of how IainMW fitted it. declaring it with the insurance im not too sure about, you may have to but im going to run it for a bit to see how i go

It is very easy to remove because its just pluged in so you can just unplug it no problem, the more expensive box they offer has an on off button and a cold start timer which doesnt kick in until 90sec. if you want more details just give them a bell, phone number is on their site and they are very helpful. It is legit, the alternative to a 'plug and go' box is an ECU remap which costs around about £300 or maybe more, people say the remap is better except having a box is more convinient i think because I can just sell it on when I get a new car. The theory of it is that it increases the power and tourque of the engine which means less foot on the gas so less diesel is used so yea you should see better MPG.

Hope this helps, just ask if you have any more questions.

In regards to the insurance - Officially you need to tell them as you are altering the vehicle from the original spec and so thus is a modification and unfortunately very few will accept a tuning box unless you go to specialist companies such as adrian flux.

The advantage of a plug and go box is that who knows its there as within a lift of the bonnet its gone ?!? if you get my hint - not that im suggesting anything !!

Forgot to mention go the box from kingquick off ebay, it is great. I do feel a difference, its much smoother and picks up well. Would a better side pannel air filter give me the 7bhp im missing?

RS-Tuning do a remap for the 1.9 which has taken the 120bhp to about 165bhp with exhaust and a itg filter, both the filter and the exhaust wont give much of an increase. the cat is what restricts most of the power, itg filters are the best for the megs, its just a replacement pannel filter, everyone uses them on the 225s to as the induction style ones showed losses in BHP.

Apparently as well its the clutch which restricts the amount of torque you can put through the meg when remaping, so if you put a better clutch on you could poss get the torque figures up somewhat and rape some other cars off the line.

Great thanks for the advice, i was also looking into a water/alchol injection system and maybe upgrading the turbo as well as the clutch. so thats about all you can do then.

cheers

The 1.9dci has the same intercooler as the 225 to, so it could be an option to buy an uprated ic for the 225 and stick that on, think there about £400 notes like.

No idea about the water injection, but i remember the only company i could find at the time for the clutch was in ireland, cant remember the name, ????? brothers.

But a de-cat or sports cat, full exhaust system, itg, ic, new clutch and custom remap (loads of torque) might see you keeping up with a stock dci175, probs quicker off line

Oh theres a company who do dump valves for them two, purely asthetic as the dcis dont need to dump, but there a propa working dump valve, its just controlled elevtrolnically to dump the pressure tho, there about £300 from dervdoctor or something

If i remember i think the water/alchol injection system replaces the intercooler, but thanks for the advice and il have a look into it all.
cheers matey

BTW this is a link to an American company that does injection systems http://www.alcohol-injection.com/

Guyz....

Reading the thread - I nearly wet me self at the thought of getting more power out of me little 1.5 dci...lolz

Anyway....
Just wanted to know - since my megane is only like 3 months old - this won't invalidate any warranty or such would it??

I am really excited about getting the module - and which one would you guys recommend -= the Classic or the Premier Hall mark???

Khalid
