Lowering Springs

Postby davidloveshismeg » Tue Feb 12, 2008 11:56 am

Hey all,

I am looking to drop my meg, not too sure how much to drop it by. I have a set of 18 rims with 215/35 zr18 tyres. Was looking at a 35mm drop but now im thinking maybe more if possible? any ideas??

Cheers!

hi mate! another N.I boy i see

when i get the cash i want mine done too. you can go to 45mm, people on here have went that low. the mechanic who fitted all my new brakes y'day thinks that maybe 45mm would be too much. he said somethin' about the the lower the springs the more wear on the bushings or somethin'.

but yeah you can defo go to 45mm.

Well, your tyre has a bit small outer diameter so will look "lost" in the arch I'm afraid. 225/40 or 235/35 would have been closer to the original outer diameter, and better IMO.

But since/if you're stuck with that size, then 45 mm is definitely better than 35 purely when it comes to visual. Otherwise you'll end up with almost as big a gap between the tyre and arch as with the original suspension height & original tyre size.

But you should also note that with those tyres you'll lose more ground clearance than just the amount the springs lower the car:
- say you originally had 195/65R15 tyres
- you change to 215/35R18
- the new tyre has a (nominal) radius 13,4 mm smaller than original
- thus with 45 mm springs your ground clearance will not be diminished by 45 but 45+13,4= 58,4 mm

Hey again,

Thanks for the input, will maybe go for the 225/40/18 tyres as im looking at getting the Momo TEN-S rims from rochford (alloywheels.com now). What you think of these rims?
