Hi guys, im considering buying some alloys from a guy at work . They are 205 40 and 17". They also say they have a 34 tread. They are 4 stud so should fit. Is here anything else i should be checkin out before i get them? I have the factory fitted 16" alloys on at the moment.

check they are 4x 100 and also check the centre bore on them. i think the ET on the meg is 45-49 so you might need 10mm spacers if the wheels are et34

They're going to look lost on the car, you'd need a 50 or at least a 45 aspect tyre......34 tread ??? do you mean et 34..?if so,you definately wont need spacers..

205/40 will make u feel that u are driving on railroads. it will be very harsh and very stiff ride.. 225/45 would be the best fit for 17''...

Your speedo will read too fast because the tyres are too small they should be 205/50/17

I bet they are off the earlier megane?

I use 215/45/17 which is a very close match to the 205/55/16 original wheels and tyres. Hub centre diameter is 60.5mm.
Use a tyre calculator such as this:

https://www.alloywheels.com/tyrecalc.asp

This will help you work out the best tyre size and how far out your speedo will be.

The 2007 1.9 dCi Megane with factory 16x6.5" alloys is ET49, with a centre bore of 60.1mm.

The important numbers you should be looking at will be stamped on the rim itself, once you know these you can just buy tyres at a later date the correct size.

Check the rim width and offset (ET).

For example I am replacing our alloys with 17x7 ET40 wheels, which will move them 3mm away from the inside wheel arch and push them 15mm further out towards the guards which looks like it will be ok (haven't got them yet so if anyone knows if this is a problem let me know!). With 205/50/17 tyres on they are a damn near perfect rolling radius to keep the speedo reading spot on.

Cheers,
Bohun

Just for info, the wheels are now fitted and are perfect. Could even push slightly further towards the outside if you wanted, by increasing wither the width or positive offsett.
Now for the lowering springs....
