Is this allowed in the UK?

I've always understood that the purpose of having only one fog light instead of two is preventing drivers from the back of mistaking them for brake lights

compleatly legal, in fact most quality cars have 2 rear fog lights, its just a penny pinching measure not to include them on cars from new.
nothing to do with mistaking them for brake lights, in fact that would be a bonus in fog, if you thought the car in front was slowing down.
the more visable the better.
my mercedes has 2 and my jeep also has 2 rear ones.

OK, then it's not illegal, but I don't agree with you that it's not confusing to have 2 foglights! 1 light gives enough warning in my opinion and makes it more clear that the driver in front of you is not breaking.

Besides, most of these foglights give such an amount of light anyway, that it can be annoying for drivers in the back.

But of course in the NL we don't have as much fog as you have

the purpose of a fog light is to make your cars rear more visable in fog...ergo, 2 lights are better than 1, thats common sence.
also it has nothing to do with confusing between brake and fog lights, just to make the rear of the car more visable...and as long as that happens then brake/fog or auxillery it matters not, dont forget that fog/incliment weather lights are "normally" used when your going "slowly", so the brake light confusion thing should not be an issue, you should not be travelling so fast in foggy weather that you cant see the car in front, and / or if its braking or not.
i for one have never been confused as to weither a car is braking or if there fog lights...lamps are an indication of events, not to be taken as so.

but what do i know

Just found out dat in the NL, it has been legalized to carry 2 foglights since some time ago, it was not allowed up to that time!

The legislation has been changed to fit the European legislation. So actually in the NL it is now allowed to have 2 rear fog lights, but they keep advising to have only one, even to remove the light from the right unit!

Just a matter of where you're living and what you are used to :)

Many cars have 2 rear fogs, Clio MKII for example. I think the law in UK used to be that if only one foglamp is present, then it must be on the drivers side. Well it was until Peugeot brought out the 206 which has one fog in the middle of the rear bumper!!!

With 2 lamps if 1 bulb blows it still means you have a fog lamp
However if you only have 1 lamp and the bulb blows ah no fog lights
Thats why i allways prefered 2

hi, ive bought two rear lights from a 2007 megane, what other parts do you reckon i need.

I dont really fancy doing it myself so would rather take it to a electrician, also if anyone near birmingham can fit the lights for me i will give them some good money for the service.
Thanks alot

It really is easy mate. There should be a wire colour coding guide on this forum somewhere and all you have to do is go to maplin, buy some single prong connectors and slip them into the pins of the rear lights. Mine works a treat with no soldering. In over a year now too!
