Cruise Control

Postby Maverick » Mon Feb 13, 2006 11:09 pm

Hi All

My first post - I hope somebody can help.

I have a 2005 Megane 1.6 Dynamic and have just started a new job with lots of motorway driving.

I realy want to get Cruise Control, but dont want to change the car, really like it and, touch wood, no problems with it yet!

Anybody knoiw if Renault will fit cruise control as an aftermarket upgrade, or anybody know of any other aftermarket kits?

Hope you can help.

Thanks

hi and welcome to the site.

Renault will NOT retrofit Cruise Control for you...
but.. you can get an aftermarket kit.

https://www.conrad-anderson.co.uk/

I've seen their cruise control work on a Seicento (i used to own one), and its impressive.

Website is a bit poor, but its detailed enough but i'd call them to be sure. They'll fit it within a day and they're around birmingham.
gives you an reason to check out the nearby Cadbury's factory!

Believe it or not, some bloke on the Spanish megane cc site (https://www.clubmeganecc.com) did actually retrofit it to his car.

It seems that the functionality of it is present in all the Meganes, but unless you have the switch to turn it on and the buttons on the steering wheel to control it then you obviously cannot use it...

However, he actually bought the cruise control switch from a dealer and fitted it, and then wired in the steering wheel remote for the stereo to switch modes and control the speed

He had a full on installation guide with photos, although I can't seem to find it on the site at the moment!

Nuts if you ask me but it is possible

Found the post on the spanish cc forum. It's in spanish but the translated version just about makes sense.

If someone who spoke spanish translated it, it would be a guide worth having.

Hi,
my Megane was bought without cruise control.
I did cruise control in accordance to spanish site (shown above) and it works :-). Only what you need is one switch (cruise control/0/speed limiter), four buttons (+,-,recall and 0) and three resistors (100ohm, 270ohm and 900ohm(82ohm+820ohm respectivelly) - values taken from Dialogys):

For buttons, I used remote control for radio (mounted on second side of steering pillar).
For showing CC on board computer I had go on Renault service and they enable it through diagnostic SW. Without it, CC works though, but you don't see any state of CC.
Now I have fully functional cruise control retrofitted:

Isn't easier to buy orginal buttons of cruise control?
I was looking for connection for button which is situated near ESP no/off button. And i couldn't find them.

I've got full electric schema of cruise control. But i don't know is it nessesairy to put new wires from stering weel to ECU? Or may be that option is ready just connect, but only one thing is to have orginal switch .

Yes, it is. But more than ten times expensive (most expensive part is airbag with cutouts for that four buttons).

I had that connection.

In my car was everything prepared, so I just connect switch near ESP on/off button and four buttons (with resistors) on two existing wires in steering pillar.

That's the reason. You're right.

But only airbag is diffrent? Steering weel is the same.

If you want original CC, you need to change or add at least
  • Inner/center part of steering wheel (part with airbag).
  • "Reading ring" (translated word by word, sorry I don't know the right term in english. It is a ring with thin belt of wires - this is needed because "ring" for steering without CC does not have extra two wires into steering wheel for CC buttons). In fact, I only heard it. For me, only price of airbag was already too high, so I discontinued exploring.
  • Cruise control buttons.
  • Cruise control/speed limiter switch.
If you have not ESP, you need also:
  • Cover with holes for CC/SL switch and ESP switch.
  • Cover that hide hole for ESP switch.

(result will be approx. twice expensive than choosing CC when you byuing a new car).

If you will be satisfied with "non-original" CC buttons, you need only last three parts plus something with four buttons (I used remote control for car radio). And only one tenth of money :-).

Is there enough buttons on the radio stalk controller?
I installed an after market headunit and that stalk control has no use, so would be ideal if i use it for CC.

I'm guessing the 1.6L manual transmission has CC too?

Anyone want to write up a better guide with lots of pictures? :D

You need four buttons, radio controller have six buttons.
MrAsia wrote:I installed an after market headunit and that stalk control has no use, so would be ideal if i use it for CC.
You can't use radio controller as is, you need do some changes inside. Original radio controler have buttons multiplexed, but for CC you need buttons connected almost separately (I cut some routing in controller for separating buttons). In Spanish guide is used radio controller for Renault Laguna (with some photo how to change it inside controller). I think that it is probably better, because this controller is a little bit smaller and will be fitted better on steering pillar.
MrAsia wrote:I'm guessing the 1.6L manual transmission has CC too?
At least two people from us have cruise control retrofitted and have manual transmission, so there is no dependency on automatic transmission.

Sorry, I told I don't know english :-(
But I am still confident that spanish guide is absolutely enough.
Connector for CC/SL switch you find very easily and for better searching of two wires in steering pillar is a photo on spanish guide.

I have some photos from radio controller inside, but they are very, very ugly (especially when they coming from "beta phase"):
first - white "mill" should be removed.
second - resistor 900 ohms is only drawed because real resistor was broken (maybe because it was from some old supplies, I don't know). Photo was created before replacing.
third - here you can see a torso of that resistor. Blue lines are wires.
fourth - green places = cut here.
Yellow dot is for better orientation front side/back side on photos.
Sorry, I have not better photos :-(.
