Head Lamp Conversion - Phase 1 to Phase 2

Postby ikhan » Wed Nov 16, 2011 1:04 pm

Is this a simple replace job? Are all the connectors etc. the same or do they need to be modded like the rears? (I know they bumper needs to be changed etc.)

all you need to do is replace headlamp mounts, and the lamps themselves, everything else is straight swap..

I have a resonably new set of ph2 projector lamps if your interested..

Thanks for that. I've got a set of headlamps but what mounts do I need? Is this the plastic bit pop-riveted at the bottom of the lamp? If so, the lamps came with these attached, but I've removed them to try and split the headlamp to paint the inside black, but then gave up as it proved a lot more difficult than the last set I done

well my car was in a prang.. and so all got replaced, the lights are genuine reno parts and are reasonably new, Ive no idea what they sell for mate, they're immaculate with no chips or anything.. make me an offer mate, chances are i'll take it.

Only reason i have them spare is because i swapped mine for the r26r ones with black bits instead of chrome.

Mate, they're not easy to open up - I've tried one and left it half way through. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it will probably end up looking very messy.

I've also done them on my Alfa and was hoping these would be as straight forward. I was doing it using an infra-red heater at the bodyshop but the guys there said because of the way these were bonded, you'd probably had to cut the top layer of plastic to be able to remove the bonding on the other side (they're bonded on both sides like a "U"). I didn't want to have to fork out for another light in case it went pear shaped so I sealed it back up again. I'm going to keep an eye out for the R26R lights (but I'm guessing they won't be cheap).

PS, the lights are Matty's, not mine

As already suggested - heat is the key to taking them apart.

I took my Range Rover ones apart by putting them in the oven (only just fitted) on the lowest temp for about 15 mins, rotating every 3 mins whilst making sure they didnt get too hot.

Then just ran a knife around the edge and the tacky sealant parted nicely. It all went back together OK too.

A heatgun/hair dryer would probably work too but be a little more fiddly if the mrs wont let you use the oven!

hi mate,,
no there units are resonably new as they were replaced along with the bumper and the reinforcement bar, and the radiator.. ive just recently put on a r26 front end, which includes the lights with the black bits as you described, its the new headlamp units i have for sale, as i swapped them for the ones with the black in them
