Car Lowered By 45mm

Postby ikhan » Thu Nov 10, 2011 11:10 am

Had my car lowered yesterday by 45mm using Spax springs - Rear springs were a couple of inches shorter but its the front springs where the real difference was (about 1/3 shorter).

Took it for a quick spin and it seems very good. Catching on the bumps a bit but so did my last car so not too fussed about it yet.

There was a scary moment though when the ABS wire came off. I thought I was buggered but luckily, it just plugged back straight in (at the hub end).

Just one question though, am I right in thinking there's no right way up on the front springs (there were no markings to say they had to be fitted in a particular direction except for say "Front Spring", which if I had fitted them personally I would have made sure the writing was right way up but I've got one upseide down at the moment). Visaully, there was no difference both ends and the coils were equally spaced apart (unlike the rears).

Isnt the ride a bit bouncy?

Do you plan any long distance trips?

I haven't driven the car over long distance yet but I'm hoping it won't be too far off from my Alfa - that was pretty good on 45mm koni spring and 17's. This will have 18's.

Long journey's shouldn't be a problem though - its local driving with speed bumps and pot holes that would worry me.

I lowered with spax 45mm also, and your right, theres nothin to state which way round the fronts go, so i just put them in with the writing the right way up..

handling after lowering is awesome. get yourself some 18's, handling really shows then..

Thanks... that puts my mind at rest a bit.

I took her for a longer drive earlier and you're right, it feels a lot tighter.

18's are next on the list as soon as I've got the other bits and bobs that are already being sorted, sorted.

FK spring on their website are under £50 (not sure of postage cost), and £69 delivered on ebay. These are 35mm front and 40mm rears though, and I wanted 45mm all round. Not sure what the actual drop with the FK's would be, but I'm guess it will depend on the weight of the car as these ar the same across the range whereas the Spax are engine size / weight dependent.

I was tempted by the Ventura's as they also do a 45/45 version, but these were slightly more expensive (£125) and not well known enough (to me).

I've mine lowered 35mm on P.I springs, sits higher at the back so was thinkin of puttin 45 springs in the back an as far as i no P.I dont make them, would it be ok to put a different make in the back and keep the P.I on the front?

Dont see a problem with that as long as 2 rears are the same, and the fronts are the same..

obviously so the car doesnt sit lop sided lol..

btw your car looks sweet.

I think mine has dropped more at the front than the rear for some reason.

Does anyone else's front door catch on the kerbs if you fully open it? I nearly had a cardiac just now!
