Retrofit Powerfold Mirrors - THEY LIVE!

Postby ikhan » Thu Aug 18, 2011 6:02 pm

I've just fitted a pair of powerfolding mirrors to my Megane. All the adjustments work of the old switch, but the connector is of a different type (8-pin). I think I'm right in thinking that the mirrors themselves are wired up to powerfold (i.e. the old passenger mirror only has connectors in the top row, but the new one has two pins in the bottom row as well, and these have wiring to them on the original loom).

The control switch, however, is 10-pin and totll different plug design. I've got some schematics but I dont kno which schematic is for my car (1.5 Expression 2005) and which would be for a car that has these mirrors as standard so that I can try to work out where to go from here. I know some people have done this mod already, so any help / advise will be greatly received (I could find anything by searching)

Ok, I think I can match the original plug to the new plug wiring, but it's pins 1, 2, 5, an 10 that I need info on (1= fold out, 2= protected left-hand side light +, 5= protected + battery feed circuit breaker interior light fuse, and 10= fold in). More concerned about 2 and 5 at the moment.

Id love to know how you done this. Ive wanted to do this for a while but thought it would be to hard to do. Any chance for some pics or a rough guide on how you done this?

Thanks

Hi, I will do a short write-up, but I haven't been able to take this past the theory stage due to work commitments. It is really straightforward (in theory) - there's an easy way, and an easier way and I will write about both when I finish mine off, hopefully this weekend.

Ok, well, for now there is no easy way, because in trying the easier but more involved way, I've just messed up 3 of my electric windows!!!!!! :x

Phew, now that the windows are fixed..... I did get the folding mirror to work, but for some reason only the driver's side work. I'm not sure if the passenger side is not getting any power or what because in my panic I just put everything back together, but I am going to try again.

Just out of interest, the mirror folded ok, but wasn't very smooth in re-opening.... I don't think that is right but as long as I can get them to work..... BTW, thet windows only needed to be "initialised", so when I went out to do this, they decided to work anyway!

Hello victorhora,

I've replied to your pm.

Basically, it's easier to swap the door loom from a similar car (i.e if you have 4 electric windows then get this from a car with 4 electric windows AND powerfolding mirrors). You might need the window switches too - my window switches worked but the child lock switch didn't work (something to do with plug colour) - the plugs were identical but just didn't fit. I bought everything from the same car, the loom, mirrors, and the switches.

Think I've got a faulty passenger side mirror - need to try a substitute....

Hope you sort it out!

I was also after power folding mirrors (this means they "close" when you leave the car right?) and 4 electric windows (for now only first ones are), but didn't really go into it yet :P

Heads up, you made a good progress already, keep it up! And inform us how it will go! :)

Thanks - I think I've worked out what the problem is, and I don't think the mirror is faulty after all. I have a theory which I will try out over the weekend (if the weather is good) and report back, hopefully with good news :D

Regarding the rear windows, I have 4 electric, but I did a conversion on my last car. It was as simple as fitting replacing the winding mechanism with electric motors AND replacing the looms in both rear doors AND the front driver's door (for the 4 electric switches). Hope this helps

All worked well? Even the lock rear windows?
So it's not hard thing to do :) - apart from folding mirrors or instaling fog lamps... which I'm after.

Cheers and thanks for help!

My last car was an Alfa Romeo. On those, the cars were already wired up all 4 electric windows upto the front driver's door, so yes they worked perfectly. Not sure if it will be the same on the Megane or not though.

When I damaged my rear left doors, I bought new ones. They had switch for electric window in. I guess it won't be hard - just wire it up, buy those motors for windows for each rear window and new switch for my (driver's) door.

Atleast I hope it will be this easy :D
