Dash Replacement

Postby ikhan » Sun Oct 03, 2010 6:59 pm

Hi, first post (have been using the site for a little while, browsing for info - briliant site and people seem freindly too :grin .

So, onto my question(s).

I may be buying a 2006 Megane. It's a cat c damaged car with both airbags deployed and so the dash will need replacing.

1st question, how easy is the dash to replace? I've searched through the forum, but haven't found a how-to or anyone who's reported back on having changed theirs I've done one on an old (97) Laguna before - interesting to say the least!;

2nd question, will any dash / airbag fit any car between 2003-08 or will phase I dash not fit into a phase II. I know, for example, the phase II steering bag is cosmetically different with a chrome ring, but is it interchangeable with the phase I or not? Can the ring be fitted separately or is it built in? Similarly, will the connectors on the passenger bag alow an older bag to be fitted (I know realistically speaking I should be going for newer bags due to these bags having a service life of 7 years or so, but I just need the car working, VIC tested etc and then I can revisit these if need be). And the dash itself, will the fittings be the same? I came across a post from a guy in Germany who suggested a plug was different but I'm not sure whey there would be a plug on the dash....???

I know the obvious answer would be to save up a little more and buy a car that doesn't need so much work, but I currently have a car that I'm happy with although I do need to replace her soon as she is getting on a bit. And this way, I can keep my car a little bit longer, and this can be a project car so (theoretically at least) I can do this up over time and hopefully save a packet ....

Any advice appreciated. TIA.
