Ok, just went to the garage for them to have a proper look and give me a proper quote; to find its not possible without major expense.
Apparently the cat is directly attached to the turbo! They'd not get the bends or the connections bang on and it wouldn't work. I'm not a mechanic at all so i can't give much more detail than that, its about all i understood from it.

So having got the bad news, it looks like Anthony had the best idea with the hollowed out cat. So i'll continue my hunt for one... No-one seems to crash a 1.9 though, they are never in the scrappys!!!

If i cant find one sooner or later i'll just take mine out and do it. Cant be too hard, haynes manual claims its not anyway haha. Anyone actually de-catted a diesel before? Megane or not? Just wondered noise levels and smells, see what they were like?

If you do this your going to have a constant warning light on the dash as the lambda (oxygen) sensor is after the cat.

You can fix that by using a sleeve which goes inbetween the sensor and the pipe. It moves it just out of the main flow of the exhaust. That way it reads as normal as it doesn't get blasted with all of the smokey exhaust.

Anthony,

To save me working out how to do that, can you explain how to put the sleeve in place? Not had a look at the sensor yet and not got my ramps back to have a look under the car.

They are more like a spacer than a sleeve I suppose. One end is the same size thread as the lambda sensor and the other end has threads to accept the sensor. They can be a length of tubing or an angled jobbie.

They just screw in between the sensor and the cat thus keeping the sensor out of the main gasflow.

I don't think you will find one online as decats aren't even available off the shelf. Should be simple enough to make one though.

I got quoted £300 for a de-cat on my 1.9 dci!! The garage said it was a graft and would cost the same as having a full s/s kit fitted. This was the same garage that did my Zafira DTi de-cat for £30!

I've had 3 de-cated diesels and have had 3 different results. 1.8 Escort TDi went quicker, Zafira was no difference and my Pug 306 HDi didn't go quicker but it revved smoother and higher without sounding course.

I may have to look into hollowing out my clutch aswell now....

Ok, i've thought of a way of doing it, all i need to do it work out what to do with the sensor.
I've going to get the main catalyst part cut out, leaving a gap between the pipes, to get a new one welded inplace.

Does the sensor have any effect on the mixture of the fuel? Or is it literally to monitor only? If so, then i'll just make sure its secured outside the pipe, giving it clean oxygen :-).

Decatting this way should be cheaper, as they dont have to get any bends in. Will get a quote for this later on. Should fit well with the remap :-).

And i can weigh the cat in and get he money back. :D
