complete newbie :D

Hi all, have just bought me first renault and looking to improve things slightly, however have no idea how !! Used to drive a 140 brake rover 25 diesel but most of the work was done by mates garage, and now I would like to do a little learning :D Its a 1.9 megane 3 door hatch, with the only problem being the passenger window not going up and down and not sitting right, I assume the ledge on which the window attatches to the motor has broken in some way??

Me first mods I am enquiring about is brakes can I just fit drilled and vented straight on or do I need to convert the calipers as well? and which ones are best too fit to the megane within a reasonable amount of money lol :D,

Also do the diesel boxes work? I had my last car remapped and it worked a dream but a tad on the expensive side, so if they work does anyone know of the best one or a reliable one?

And lastly and yes a boring one for the mod section lol, what is the most economical way of driving it? Cos so far it make no sense to me at all lol? and as i drive 110 miles a day a hand in upping my mpg would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks all

Vented AND (through-)drilled rotors are usually not recommended for road use as they're a bit on the fragile side. But get some grooved and/or "blind-drilled" rotors, they're no more fragile than the standard discs.

I had some EBC 3GD sport rotors on my Twingo and they were great, had some track time on them and there was no glazing to the pads (EBC Greenstuff), thanks to the grooves I guess. Be aware, though, that grooved rotors are slightly noisier than blank rotors. If we stay on the EBC products, they claim that the Ultimax BlackDash USR Slotted Rotors are more quiet than conventional grooved rotors.

Besides EBC, I think at least Brembo and ATE do sport rotors to many makes and models. The 280 mm rotor as used in the Megane shouldn't be hard to find as a 'sport' replacement.

You won't need to change the calipers as the replacement sport rotors are exactly the same size as the originals.

Unless you're planning on some serious track time there's no need really, but an affordable upgrade would be the bigger 300mm rotors and calipers as fitted to the Scenic 2. Not sure if all engine versions had them, but the 300mm calipers shouldn't be too hard to find from a scrapped Scenic , should be quite some by now. Combine them with some grooved 300mm Scenic 2 sport rotors and you'll be on the brakes all the time! ;-)

Welcome Adam. Maybe i can help with the boring bit, what i tend to do is find a nice 7.5 tonne truck cruising at 60 ish and slipstream it. Works for me when i've got 40 miles of dual carriage way to travel on to see my lass

if you get your car remaped and drive it sensibly your mpg should go up, obviously if you boot it, it will go down somewhat. get most mpg from cruising, ie constant speed sit at 70, 80 what ever in 6th, not keep putting your foot on accelerater and the brake etc, should see good returns on long runs, i used to see high 50s on long runs.

few different options available for remaps, theres a number of plug and play remote boxes that can simply be "plugged in and instant remap, unplug and back to standard" although these dont give you the best performance. something to think about before remapping it is how many miles engine has on it, and if its been well looked after etc. as the remap will only put more stress on the engine.

RS-Tuning in leeds are sh1t hot for remaps for megs the guy develops all the remaps himself, think they have seen the 1.9dci go from 120 to mid 160's, and apparently if you got an uprated clutch you could get him to put more torque through it. they also do a box now which will save the standard settings if you want the car back to standard.

if your getting it remapped it'd be worth looking into an itg replacement pannel filter at the same time to let the engine breath a bit better, induction kits dont work to well on the meg, found to reduce bhp. get a stainless exhaust on and you should see 165bhp with the above mods.

brakes would be a good starting point if your planning on doing the above as the std ones are abit shat. plenty on places on the net sell uprated discs and pads, just ask them if there suitable for road use.
