aux lead for mp3

Having an issue with a lead I bought off amazon.
It's actually for my espace iv.
Its an aux lead with 3.5mm jack for mp3 player, phone, tape player (if any of you young uns know what one of those is, lol!).
Plugged in next to 6disc changer; as the plugs are different its not a lead to replace the changer like some, but definitely for the aux capability. Switched aux on, plugged phone in, pressed play and... Nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried it with something else

Not tried it with anything else yet, but the phone works on other stereos via aux.
Will try old walkman but I'm not hopeful
