Edge 12" Subwoofer, Edge ED7400 and Pioneer TS-Q131C install

Postby hassen27 » Wed May 30, 2012 9:52 pm

Hiya.
I got myself a second hand Edge 12" subwoofer and Edge ED7400 amplifier to add to the car as I was not happy with the sound. After 3 days of working on it part time, I finally managed to get it all hooked up and working with my Sony CDX GT30 RN headunit. It was not the easiest thing to do as I had never installed an amplifier before and had to search up on the interweb to find a way to get the amplifier power cable to the battery in the engine bay via a hole in the firewall, that was behind the glove box. This meant dismantling it and that was tricky to do by itself. In the end, I managed get it all wired up and working after a fair bit of hard work.
This is it installed in the boot of the car.

I still have the stock speakers in the car at the moment and waiting for the Pioneer TS-Q131C to be delivered this week. Once they are here, I will install them and get some pictures up. Hoping for dramatic improvement in the sound quality with the new speakers, tweeter and subwoofer combined with the Sony headunit. With just the subwoofer so far, the overall sound is already better than stock and it does definitely thump :)

I got the new speakers today in the post and here are some pictures of the install. It was really straight forward and required just a screwdriver for the hex heads of the screws holding the speakers and a flathead one to pry the cover from the door. All in all it took about 30 min to install as I took pictures along the way. So far the sound is a big improvement from the stock speakers and once the speakers bed in for a while, it will only get better. I will post an update in a couple of weeks on the sound quality of the speakers.

These are the stock tweeters out. It was really easy to take out. Didn't even need any tools.

Door grill off the car. Fairly easy and instructions in the box was easy to follow. A bit of brute force required.

Door connector for speaker. Really easy to unclip and attach to new speakers.

Piece of plastic that is supposed to go round the new speakers to provide a snug fit in the door panel.

New speaker with grill in place. Too bad you can't see it properly as it is quite cool to look at.

Headunit Sony and found out that the Xplod setting for the eq is quite nice with the subwoofer in place.

Quick update:
The Edge amplifier packed up a couple of days ago. Bought it to my Audio guy and he said the amplifier had pretty much died due to a surcharge of power. Apparently, the previous owner had jammed the fuse in so tight that it melted and didn't break the circuit when it was supposed to do.
So, I had to get another amplifier and luckily enough, there was a second hand Blaupunkt GTA 740 that he had. He installed it and I must say, with the Edge 12" subwoofer, the sound is much cleaner and there are more parameters to play with now on the frequency side. I had it in the car car for one day and there is a marked improvement on the quality of the bass.
I think in the long term, I will look into getting a nicer subwoofer, maybe a JL Audio one to pair it up with the Blaupunkt amplifier. Most probably will find a nice second hand one once I have a bit of money set aside.

Hi Mate

Where did you ground the amp?

Im not too keen on drilling a hole, but will if i have to, is there an easier way?

There is a ground point on the left hand side near the rear lights. It is behind the carpet and not too hard to find. It is very convenient if you have the amplifier on the left side of the boot. Good luck :)
