Problems setting up an FM transmitter for MP3 Player

I recently bought an FM transmitter for my MP3 player as my friend uses one in his Peugot and I was quite impressed. However you have to tune the radio to a channel with no signal and that is where I am having a problem. I have tried tuning the radio but all the time it latches on to the nearest station. I have tried it in 'Expert Mode' to manually tune the darn thing as the manual says but all I get is 'Tuner List' and 'Search' flashing up and when you use the < and > arrows it again latches on to the nearest station. Can anyone help? I have a 53 VVT 1.6 Dynamique and the radio/CD is of the Tuner List variety I believe.
