Changing indicator bulb

Postby HughJampton » Tue Aug 29, 2017 3:54 pm

An hour of my life I will never get back - Stupid design - Nevertheless...

Remove a couple of self tapping screws from under the inner wing area and a couple of pop head retaining clips.
(just the front half of the black plastic guarding is ok).

Then remove both the plastic corner shrouds across the front engine bay area.
Simply turn the screws & pop out with a screwdriver.

Remove the long plastic shroud across the front in the same way.

Underneath the engine remove the retaining screws, 4 of them, I think (10mm)

You can then prise the front grill / bumper from the headlights & front panel. Take your time, it does come apart.

You are now ready to unbolt the three screws securing the headlights in their retaining mount.

The headlight will slide forwards & give access to the wiring clip. Using a screwdriver pull the red clip downwards and remove the connector.

You now have the front of the car in pieces and the headlight bulbs & indicator accessible to change.

I have seen it said on other places its an £80 - £110 garage cost just to remove the unit...!! NO WAY...!

Under the wing there is a small guard that unscrews leaving a 4" hole near to the rear of the light - Useless...!

You'd need to be a gynaecologist to use that - even if you did get your hand in it you still couldn't remove the complete headlight unit.

My problem was with the indicator bulb. It had worked loose. On taking out the unit, removed the bulb in its holder, retensioned the metal contacts in the lamp unit with a bit of pressure using a screwdriver underneath them, bending them up slightly & screwed the bayonet back in place.

Worked a treat.

Literally - impossible to get to the indicator bulb without removing the whole lot.

Oh My God!
You really need to dismantle the front end to change a bulb? FFS..
I am surprised there are so many still on the road - £100 each time a bulb blows? That would be about 1/5 of the car's value..

thats what i do with one exception I no longer have the four bolts as mine broke off a long time ago Dont remove the top plates either, just the clips holding the fron of the bumper to teh front plate. What ive done recently (ive owned the car for 8 years) is change all 4 bulbs at once, this year i'm gonna use it sa my winter car instead of the bike so may need to invest in new headlamps as the output is poor.
