Newbie had Megane for 4 years

Postby shropslad » Sun Oct 07, 2007 4:35 pm

Hi to everyone, my experience with our Renault 1.6 megane has been great, it has now covered 108,000 miles with no major problems at all. Am I the only one?
We purchased it new in September 2003 did 10,000 miles in it we then had it converted to LPG, I did some research and we had the Prins system installed, it does 300 miles on £15 of LPG. equivelent to 70MPG.
Problems:

Had all four coils replaced under warrenty, have had one more go since, had front drivers door window mechanism replaced under warrenty (car was over 3 years old at this point)
the heater blower thingy went, cost me £50 from renault decided to have a go & fit it myself with my trusty Haynes, it was a bit fiddley but did it in 45 mins (renault quoted me 1 to 2 hours @£70 an hour  )
Had cam belt changed at 70,000 miles, 12,000 miles later the water pump went, so while they did the water pump had a new cam belt as well for the sake of £30.
Just passed its second MOT,, biggest problem is bulbs, also the sun roof has seized through lack of use,, it trys to open but doesn't.
I did the front pads & discs,, its only just had a new set of pads on the rear after 107,000 miles :-) Just put a new battery on,
My wife does a 120 mile round trip 4 days a week, car has been great. thinking of changing it but proly won't get much for it. I do oil & filter changes my self every 18000 miles using fully synth
Question:
How many miles can I expect from the 1.6 engine?

Thankyou

Mark

Hi Mark

You finally found our forum then? Only joking, welcome along - hope you find it useful here.

Looks like you have been very fortunate with your Meg, hope it stays that way.

As for life expectancy on your 1.6 - I don't have a clue, but it would seem that you look after it well yourself so who knows, may well be a 200,000 miler!!! 8)

Regards

Welcome to the club.
Was the LPG conversion expensive? Does it use a doughnut in the spare wheel well? Are there many LPG outlets in good old Shropshire?
I am considering a conversion once my warranty has run out.

LPG

Yes, it has a tank that fits where the spare wheel would be, it cost £1500, had it done at Autogas Brimfield near Ludlow, just down the A49 from you. I contacted Renault & so long as the conversion was done by a certified garage then it didn't affect warrenty. The fuel inlet fits neatly behind the fuel flap next to the petrol filler,, its like it was designed for LPG really neat.
Should get the cost of conversion back after 20k miles,, well worth doing,, plenty of places to fill up once you know.
