Just scrapped my '97 Astra, and got myself a '05 Megane

Postby sagum » Sun Feb 17, 2013 3:51 am

Hi guys and girls,

I thought I best make my first post on the forums as a introduction.

There doesn't seem to be any particular format or general census on what is an introduction here so I'll just make one up :)

I'm located Stoke-on-Trent, and last week I picked up a '05 Megane 1.6 privilege. It seems to have all the goodies included and is a massive upgrade from my last car - Well pleased so far.

When it comes to cars I'm pretty boring, not really much to say except I don't really know much at all about the mechanical side of cars and while I can do the most basic of things such as change a bulb, flat tyre and I've even managed to change brake pads before it's not something that I tend to want to do nor enjoy doing. Partly because I don't know how to do the things I want, but mainly because I don't have the tools to do it.

The last car I owned was a '97 Astra 1.4 LS. It was the first car I had after passing my test and while it served it's purpose over the years I've owned it I decided to scrap it when it failed its MOT last month. Something that I did this morning.

A few things I've noticed since the switch over;
The gear box seems to be electronic with noticeable micros switch clickyness when engaging the gears. Do prefer the mechanical feel of pushing the gears into place on the Astra.
The brakes are nice and sharp and I've been enjoying giving myself whiplash for the past week as I've gotten used to them.
The clutch is very light. Not sure if I'm used to the heavy clutch on Astra, or not being able to hear the engine as much in the Megane.
Much higher seating position on the Megan too, and it almost feels like I'm driving a MPV and that's quite nice.

It's a bit weird not having to use a key. I still go to turn the key when I get in and I'm never really sure if the car is locked or not without re-checking the doors.

My insurance has been a little over £200 cheaper too, a bit of a nice surprise.

Having had a look around the site and forum, it looks to have quite a bit of useful information. Hopefully you'll enjoy me as a member :p

Anyway, I've waffled on already so I'll just show you a picture of the mods I've done to my car already ;)

OK, I did photo shop that a bit and was only a bit of fun. It was the first picture I took.

I'll give it a clean now it's on my own drive and get a few proper pictures taken, but I'm sure you've all seen the same old car before. Thought this might make a bit of difference ;)
