Should be possible if the new head unit is compatible with the VDO-Dayton digital protocol that the standard head unit uses to talk to the changer. Connects2 or others might make an interface that will translate between other CD changer protocols.

As far as I know it's the same sensor.

Any ideas where the ECU gets it's reading from? I think that would be my next place to check. My guess is that the ECU knows how much fuel has been used, as it has controlled the ammount of fuel being pumped into the common rail. So just keeping a total of the volume I suppose.
