Here is an update. Thanks for all your suggestions, but you were all wrong. ;-) The problem was nothing more than the rubber tube which forms part of the vacuum system for the EGR valve which had weakened (caused by oily crud from the breather pipe which is just above it) and wasn't holding the vacu...
