On the assumption that the starter motor has jammed, try putting it in gear and rocking the car back and forth to free it up.
Could be that the spring has muck on it and cant 'throw back'.

I know nothing......... but if the pump is pushing air back into the line surely it cant be sucking. Can it run backwards? Connections?

Having recently paid through the nose to solve the well known window problem on my tourer, I pass on the info from my Renault trained expert. Apparently all the wizardry passes through the drivers door, so that's his usual first port of call. Unplugging and re-connecting the plug from door to chassi...

I know the fan is up behind the glovebox and that the glovebox has to come out first.
