Which OBD Reader?
I am looking to get an OBD reader. Which is the best combo to go for?
I have seen bluetooth models that connect to your smartphone and also ones that connect to your laptop via USB. Which is the better option? What do people on the forum use? Is the Elm327 any good?
Thanks

This is ELM327 which I use. The version with Bluetooth can be interfaced to a mobile phone, and it is about £10.

I use torque as a toy, and scanmaster for logging the live parameters for further plotting.

is this the one ?
i cant get it to read out the fuel trim. I have very high fuel consumption and want to see why is it like that. i have no error just 15 l/100km in city.

Re: Which OBD Reader?
Yes, this is the one. I am using an old development version. The problem is that it can't plot too many diagrams in the same time, so I have to save the log and plot it with Excel or GnuPlot.

Re: Which OBD Reader?
Regarding fuel consumption. You need to check it on a calm motorway journey. Mine does about 50mpg Newcastle-London and 55mpg back, driving as on cruse control (which I don't have), mostly at 70mph. In town my wife gets 35mpg in summer and 30mpg in winter. She does short journeys on a cold engine and in traffic jam. Her average speed is about 12mph.

These are the plots of live data from elm327 logged with Scanmaster and plotted with Excel.

K-line, ISO 14230-4 KWP fast init protocol. CAN bus also responds, but incoherently. So, I am not using it. It is only for the proprietary Clip protocol.
I do such a test run every year and compare the results.

MilosB wrote:in a very steep street city (on a hill most of the time) very few roads are level I get 12-15 L/100km = 24 - 18 MPG is this to high ? or i should start finding where does the fuel drip (i have to say the trip is 1km and the car barely gets up to temperature)
on a high way - 120km/h + some local loads at 80km/h all the way on a CC i got 6l/100km = 47MPG on a 800km trip of which 200km is a up and down a hill and AC on as it was cooold
is it any god ? 1.9dci at 154oookm. I suppose the city milage is very low
A qoute from consumption tread.
I'm suspecting either a egr being cloghed (but not enough to make an error, or a dpf. A high fuel trim should indicate it. Or if there is no high fuel trim than it's only my hevy fot.
Thanks for being very helpful
