How can they fail it if they don't know where the clunking is coming from (and therefore whether its safe or not for MOT standards)? If they knew the general area of the clunk then you'd be better able to address it - I can't see how they can fail it without telling you which component has any play.

Not sure about the gearbox, but for the exhaust, personally I would only use the genuine one for a genuine look. Generally speaking, it is normally on or immediately next to the thermostat - where this is on a Megane, I don't know as I've never looked for it. Follow the coolant pipes? Having said that, I was looking for the same on my brother's Passat and couldn't find it either.
